Cites welfare. Cato research shows that's garbage.
Research contradicts administration claims about immigrant welfare use. In February 2025, the libertarian Cato Institute published a paper showing that native-born Americans consumed, on an average per capita basis, more welfare and entitlement benefits than all immigrants. The study found immigrants consumed 21% fewer welfare and entitlement benefits than native-born Americans on a per capita basis in 2022.

President Donald Trump blitzed through a prime-time address to the nation on Dec. 17, but while short, Trump's speech contained a number of inaccurate or misleading claims, many of which he has repeated in public speeches for months.

This is now about whether we’re willing to normalize sickness in power.
Whether we tell ourselves comforting stories because confronting the actual reality in front of us is frightening.
Whether we allow cruelty, lying, and instability to become the cultural baseline simply because calling it out makes dinner conversations awkward or costs us friends or clicks or donors.

During a Q&A on C-SPAN, President George Bush reflected on what he saw as a resurgence of familiar currents in American politics: isolationism, protectionism, and nativism. He pointed to the 1920s as a moment worth revisiting — an era marked by “America First” sentiment, more restrictive immigration laws, and skepticism of global trade, all of which some historians connect to the economic struggles that followed.
His message wasn’t a condemnation, but a caution: history has patterns, and it’s worth asking where those patterns might lead. What stood out most was his hope for a future shaped by thoughtful, forward-looking immigration policy.
More than a decade later, it’s still a question worth considering: how does history inform the choices we make today?
